Step 1
Rinse basmati rice thoroughly until water runs clear. Set aside.
Step 2
In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add finely chopped onion and sauté for 3-5 minutes until softened.
Step 3
Stir in minced garlic, turmeric powder, and cumin powder. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Step 4
Add the rinsed rice to the pot and stir for 2 minutes to toast the grains and coat them with spices.
Step 5
Pour in chicken or vegetable broth. Add salt and black pepper. Bring to a boil.
Step 6
Reduce heat to low, stir in frozen green peas, cover tightly, and simmer for 15-18 minutes, or until all liquid is absorbed and rice is tender.
Step 7
Remove from heat and let rest, covered, for 5-10 minutes to allow the steam to finish cooking the rice.
Step 8
Fluff the rice with a fork. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley before serving.
