Step 1
Wash the toor dal thoroughly and cook it with 3 cups of water and turmeric powder in a pressure cooker for 3-4 whistles or until soft. Mash lightly.
Step 2
Heat ghee or oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and hing, let them splutter.
Step 3
Add finely chopped onion and sauté until golden brown. Then add ginger-garlic paste and green chili, cooking for another minute.
Step 4
Stir in chopped tomato, red chili powder, and garam masala. Cook until tomatoes soften and the oil separates.
Step 5
Pour the cooked dal into the tempered spices. Add salt and some water if needed to adjust consistency. Bring to a simmer.
Step 6
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving hot with rice or roti.
