Step 1
Prepare the topping: Dice tomatoes into small pieces. Finely chop basil. Combine tomatoes, basil, 1 tbsp olive oil, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Let sit for at least 10 minutes for flavors to meld.
Step 2
Slice bread into 1/2-inch thick pieces. Toast slices in a dry skillet, on a grill, or under a broiler until golden and crispy on both sides.
Step 3
Cut one garlic clove in half. While bread is still warm, rub the cut side of the garlic generously over one side of each toasted bread slice.
Step 4
Spoon a generous amount of the tomato-basil mixture onto each garlic-rubbed toast. Drizzle with remaining olive oil and, if desired, a touch of balsamic glaze.
Step 5
Serve immediately as an appetizer.
