Step 1
Wash masoor dal thoroughly and combine with 3 cups water and turmeric powder in a pot or pressure cooker. Cook until soft and mushy, about 15-20 minutes in a pot or 2 whistles in a cooker.
Step 2
Heat ghee or oil in a small pan for tempering. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Step 3
Add chopped garlic, grated ginger, and green chilies. Sauté until garlic turns light golden.
Step 4
Add finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Stir in chopped tomato and red chili powder, cooking until tomatoes are soft.
Step 5
Pour the tempering into the cooked dal. Add salt and mix well. Simmer for 5 minutes, adjusting consistency with water if needed.
Step 6
Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with rice or bread.
