Step 1
In a medium saucepan, combine steel-cut oats, water, milk, and salt. Bring to a boil over high heat.
Step 2
Once boiling, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until oats are tender and have absorbed most of the liquid. For creamier oats, add a bit more milk or water as desired.
Step 3
While oats are cooking, lightly toast the chopped pecans in a small dry skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, until fragrant. Be careful not to burn them.
Step 4
Once oats are cooked, stir in the butter and ground cinnamon.

Serve the oats warm, divided into bowls. Top each serving with a sprinkle of brown sugar and the toasted pecans.
