Step 1
Prepare Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, milk, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined (do not overmix). Form into 1.5-inch meatballs.
Step 2
Brown Meatballs: Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown meatballs in batches on all sides until golden. Remove meatballs and set aside.
Step 3
Prepare Sauce: Add diced onion to the pot and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Add a dash of olive oil if needed. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
Step 4
Simmer Meatballs: Return browned meatballs to the sauce. Add a few torn basil leaves. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for at least 45 minutes, or up to 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally, until meatballs are tender and flavors have melded.
Step 5
Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve hot with pasta, polenta, or crusty bread, garnished with fresh basil and extra Parmesan.
